START WITH THE ATHLETE, NOT THE LABEL

Different bodies.
Same right to train.

A workout might call for a muscle-up, box jump, deadlift, or run. This resource helps athletes and coaches explore changes when skill, strength, range of motion, equipment, fatigue, injury history, or disability affects the original task. Being a wheelchair user does not tell us your trunk function, shoulder strength, transfer preferences, or desired training goals. The athlete leads those decisions.

01 / INTENT

Start with what the prescribed movement develops: strength, power, skill, speed, or conditioning.

02 / OPTIONS

Review advanced, developing, seated/wheelchair, and other adaptive approaches without ranking athletes.

03 / ACCOUNTABILITY

Confirm any changed movement, dose, load, range, or score with the approved workout prescription or coach.

IMPORTANT — EDUCATIONAL REFERENCE, NOT A PRESCRIPTION

These 452 entries are decision-support ideas, not authorized RX/Scaled 1/Scaled 2/Masters/Adaptive workout standards. No suggestion guarantees personal suitability or equivalent reps/calories. If pain, dizziness, medical restrictions, skin issues, instability, or unsafe transfers are involved, stop and seek appropriate qualified guidance. Competition rules can be more restrictive than training modifications.

THE MOVEMENT FINDER

Find your movement.
Find your options.

Search the name, abbreviation, or movement skill. Expand a result to compare paths and the safety tradeoffs.

ADAPTIVE & SEATED ATHLETES

Access is a coaching conversation.

A wheelchair is not an exercise prescription. Before choosing any seated variation, ask what the athlete wants to accomplish and what they know works for their body. The athlete should decide whether to use their own chair, a training bench, accessible machine, or a different setup. Never assume a transfer is possible or desired.

01 / ASK FIRST

Goals and preferences

Discuss the intended stimulus, athlete experience, autonomy, preferred language, and whether a modification is actually necessary.

02 / POSITION & SUPPORT

Trunk, grip, and clearance

Check individually relevant seating stability, trunk function, reach, shoulder range, straps, brakes, wheel clearance, and movement path.

03 / SKIN & RECOVERY

Pressure and repetitive loading

Account for pressure management, altered sensation where applicable, upper-limb workload, rest, and any professional restrictions.

04 / PRESCRIPTION

Change the right variable

Select movement, equipment, repetitions, time, work:rest, and effort together. Never assume an automatic wheelchair distance or calorie exchange.

05 / ACCESSIBILITY

Clear environment

Consider door and lane widths, turn space, stable anchor points, safe surfaces, and controls reachable by the athlete.

06 / SPORT STANDARDS

Training is not competition

Adaptive competition divisions and allowed changes depend on the actual event and organizer—not this library or wheelchair use alone.

HOW TO USE THIS WITH YOUR WORKOUT

Modify deliberately.
Log truthfully.

STEP 01

Read the session objective and applicable standards before changing movements.

STEP 02

Choose the route that fits the athlete’s actual available function and safe setup.

STEP 03

Agree on exact reps, time, resistance, and score type; record the modification in TrainHeroic.

full Sent scoring stays specific.

For a prescribed time-capped FOR TIME workout, finish under the cap = actual time; unfinished = cap plus one second per remaining scoring repetition. The established distance units for programmed running (10 m), sandbag carry (10 m), and handstand walk (5 ft) are NOT automatically transferred to wheelchair propulsion, arm erg, or other modified movements. Use an explicitly approved scoring approach.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Answers before your next session.

Do I have to do the prescribed movement to participate?

No. Athlete participation depends on finding an appropriate training task. Which version counts as RX or another tier, and how it is scored, must follow the actual session prescription.

Does this page tell me the correct adaptive competition standard?

No. CrossFit and independent adaptive organizers define their own divisions, eligibility criteria, movement standards, and approval procedures. Check the current event documents; training substitutions may be prohibited in competition.

Is every seated option suitable for everyone who uses a wheelchair?

No. Wheelchair users have very different trunk, grip, shoulder, hip and transfer capacities. The seated ideas are starting points for discussion, never an assumption about an athlete’s abilities or a medical clearance.

Can I call my workout RX if I use a substitute?

Only if that exact change is permitted by the published RX workout standard. Otherwise log the actual movement and appropriate category.

Can I swap any run for a wheelchair push of the same distance?

No. The physical workload, propulsion mechanics, surface, and equipment change. Work time and effort may be useful anchors when an approved modification is designed, but neither meters nor calories transfer universally.

What about pain, injuries, or neurological/medical conditions?

This page is not a diagnosis, treatment, or rehabilitation plan. Do not work through concerning pain or symptoms. Seek individualized guidance from qualified clinicians and experienced adaptive coaches as needed.
